Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Distillation Head, 250mL, Solvent, Modified, 14/20 Inner Joint On Take-Off. Designed to maintain distilled solvents in an inert atmosphere. Top of main vapor tube is open and an additional vapor tube has been added to decrease risk of pressure buildup. Upper sampling port has a 4mm PTFE stopcock with a 14/20 outer joint for use with CG-3022 septa. Lower drain is centered to allow total drainage of storage head. Double oblique 2mm bore PTFE stopcock on the 250 through 1000mL sizes allows for removal of distilled solvent or return to flask. The 250mL size has a 4mm double oblique stopcock. Both the uptake tube and top outer joints are 24/40, while the take-off tube is supplied with a 14/20 inner joint.**Design suggested by Dr. A.K. 125mL Solvent Distillation Still Head, Airfree, Schlenk. Still head in 125mL capacity for use in re-purification of solvents under inert atmosphere. One-piece design of condenser and storage reservoir eliminates multiple connections usually associated with distillation setup. 0-4mm Chem-Vac™ Chem-Cap valves provide for grease-free, leakproof seals. Lower 3-way valve (C) allows for solvent return to flask, take-off or storage in graduated reservoir. Syringe access port (B) incorporates a 4mm PTFE stopcock with a 14/20 outer joint for use with CG-3022 septum stoppers permitting repeated syringe punctures or changes of the septum without breaching the integrity of the solvent. Valve (A) allows for isolation of the still from the inert gas source. Valve (D) permits evacuation and purging of the receiver flask. 100mL bump trap for use between a rotary evaporators steam tube and evaporator flask, preventing fluid from being drawn into the condenser. Trap has 24/40 top and bottom joints. Improved design incorporates two drain holes to expedite the return of solvent to the evaporator flask.

Condenser, 45/50 Joint, Reflux, 315 x 100mm. Compact high efficiency reflux condenser employs a double wall thimble shape bulb sealed into the outer jacket. Serrated hose connections for water connection extend through the outer bulb and have an O.D. of 10mm at the middle serration. While the overall height of this condenser is only 210-215mm, it has the efficiency of a standard 400mm Liebig or West condenser.
